Living in Wimauma, Florida
Located in southeastern Hillsborough County, Wimauma is a small town with a population of around 10,000 people. It was founded by Captain C.H. Davis in 1902, who decided to name the town after the first letters of each of his children’s names - Will, Maude, and Mary. Captain Davis had moved to the area to help build the railroad from Durant to Manatee County in the early 1900s.
As a railroad town, Wimauma developed around a railroad depot, with the railroad tracks serving as the eastern boundary of the community. These railroad tracks were ultimately removed in 1984. While Wimauma was originally incorporated as a municipality, it is currently an unincorporated census-designated place.
Wimauma is a small, tight-knit community. Although more housing developments have been built in recent years, the town has retained its more rural character, with plenty of space for residents to enjoy the outdoors. It is a diverse town with many Hispanic residents and Latino businesses, as well as a number of retirement communities.
Reflecting its diversity, you can find plenty of great food in Wimauma. You might visit Garcia’s Bakery, Taqueria El Sol, The Country Cuban, Ana’s Mexican Restaurant, Taqueria Guanajuato, Julia’s Tacos, or Goodson Farms for a bite to eat. There is also plenty to do if you enjoy outdoor recreation, including visiting Little Manatee River State Park, Elmira’s Wildlife Sanctuary, Canoe Outpost, or Berry Bay Farm.
While there isn’t an overabundance of retail stores or exciting events in Wimauma, it is just a short drive to bigger cities and towns like Sun City Center, Ruskin, and Tampa. Many residents of Wimauma also commute to these locations for work, as Wimauma doesn’t have a lot of industry within town limits.
Tampa is a bit of a drive from Wimauma—the 30-mile distance could mean a drive of 40 minutes to an hour, depending on the time of day. That being said, it is still close enough to easily catch a Lightning, Buccaneers, or Devil Rays game. You can also head into the city to see a show, visit a museum, shop, dine at fine restaurants, or explore its many attractions.
Wimauma is part of the Hillsborough County School District. It has two public elementary schools, Wimauma Elementary, and Reddick Elementary. Shields Middle School in Ruskin serves students in Wimauma, while high schoolers can attend either Lennard High or Sumner High School - both located outside of city limits. There are two public charter schools in Wimauma - RCMA Wimauma Academy and RCMA Wimauma Groves CDC.
