About Ruskin
Ruskin is a smaller town and census-designated place in Hillsborough County. It was named for John Ruskin, a well-known English art critic, social reformer, and philosopher. Located 24 miles south of Tampa, Ruskin is home to approximately 28,620 people. Route 41 runs through the center of town, while Interstate 75 passes along the eastern edge - making it easy for Ruskin residents to commute to Bradenton, Brandon, Sarasota, and Tampa.
Ruskin was founded in the early 1900s by Dr. George McAnelly Miller, who purchased land to develop. The Millers built homes, a sawmill, a school, and a post office in what became Ruskin. Over time, Ruskin became an agricultural hub, particularly for growing tomatoes. In fact, Ruskin still hosts a Tomato Festival each year in May. Ultimately, Ruskin became more suburban as more Tampa-area residents looked to relocate to a quieter town within easy driving distance of the city.
Ruskin offers a lower cost of living than many Tampa suburbs. The average rent in Ruskin is $1,366 per month. By comparison, the average rent in Tampa is $2,288 per month while the average rent in Largo is $1,725.
There are a variety of housing types in Ruskin, including single-family homes, townhouses, condominiums, and apartments. Rent options include everything from larger houses in Mirabay to smaller apartments in Kings Point.
Ruskin is 19.5 square miles in size. Its attractions include the Ruskin Tomato Fair, the annual BIG DRAW (a festival in honor of John Ruskin), the A.P. Dickman House, the Fountain of Youth, the Cockroach Bay Aquatic Preserve, Cockroach Key, Little Manatee River State Park, and the Firehouse Cultural Center. There is plenty to do in Ruskin, including visiting the E.G. Simmons Regional Park, taking in a movie at the Ruskin Family Drive-In, enjoying art at the De Stijl Art Gallery, finding a great book at the Ruskin Branch Library, and enjoying the water at the Bahia Beach Nature Preserve.
Ruskin is also near beach towns like Bradenton and Sarasota along Florida’s Gulf Coast. It is also close to Tampa, where residents (sometimes referred to as Ruskinites) can attend a professional sporting event, see a show, dine out, go shopping, or enjoy a museum. Ruskin is also close to kid-friendly attractions like Busch Gardens and Zoo Tampa.
Ruskin is part of the Hillsborough County School District. Public schools include Cypress Creek Elementary School, Ruskin Elementary School, Thompson Elementary School, Shields Middle School, and Lennard High School. There are many private schools as well, including LLT Academy, Destiny Christian Academy, Ruskin Christian School, and the First Baptist Ruskin Christian School.
There are not any hospitals located directly in Ruskin. However, there are a number of great hospitals in nearby cities and towns, including Tampa General Hospital, HCA Florida South Tampa Hospital, St. Joseph’s Hospital - South, and HCA Florida South Shore Hospital. The Ruskin Branch Library and the SouthShore Regional Library, part of the Tampa-Hillsborough County Library System, are both popular in the area.
